The modern foreign language that children learn at English Martyrs is French. This is taught throughout Key Stage 2. They follow a scheme published by La Jolie Ronde and the emphasis of the lessons is initially on speaking and listening. We believe that the study of French is important as we prepare our children for life in a global society.
Children learn to recognise basic words and sounds in French from Year 3 and gradually learn to put sentences together, enabling them to hold a brief conversation by the time they are in Year 6. They learn something of the structure of the language recognising parts of speech and conjugating simple verbs. As children make progress in speaking and listening they begin to develop skills in writing in French and can construct sentences and short passages by the time they are ready for High School. They learn something of the culture of France which fits well into our ethos of respect and tolerance for other people and societies.
