Music

Participation in music provides children with a wide range of skills. Through the study of music, children at English Martyrs not only develop skills in pitch, rhythm, singing and specific musical instruments but they develop their confidence, listening skills and teamwork. Music is a very inclusive subject, and provides opportunities for all children to participate.

We believe that all children should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument so, through the local authority's extended services programme, we provide free music lessons to two year groups in the school. Children have tuition in African drumming in Year 3 and ukulele playing in Year 4. All lessons are provided by specialist music teachers and the children are able to show off their skills in our termly assemblies to which the families of Year 3 and 4 children are warmly invited.

In addition to these whole-class lessons individual and small group music teaching is provided through Wakefield Local Authority's peripatetic music service. We currently offer guitar, violin and brass lessons Key Stage Two pupils. For further information about these lessons please speak to Mrs Elliott.

Children at English Martyrs also have lots of opportunities to take part in extra-curricular music activities. A choir runs all year for years 3, 4, 5 and 6.

Children also have opportunities to take part in productions both in class at Christmas, and through our Drama Club. This year's productions are, 'Eddie the Penguin Saves the World', performed by drama club children in years 1, 2 and 3 in Spring, then 'Aladdin' which will be performed in the Summer term by drama club children in years 4, 5 and 6.
