School Council

The School Council at English Martyrs Catholic Primary School provides an exciting opportunity for children to have a say in various aspects of school life. The council is currently made up of representatives from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 who have been elected to represent the views of all pupils and are tasked with improving different parts of our school.

The aim of the School Council is to promote the views of the children through discussion about issues raised by children and staff, which affect the life of the school both in the present and the future. We are a democratic community of learners and believe it is important that children are encouraged to take ownership of their learning environment and take on projects that will improve the quality of the school.

Student councils’ provide a foundation for active learning and as well as the benefits to the wider school community, the School Council also provides a basis for active learning of important life skills for individuals.

Children elected to represent their class have the opportunity to practice speaking and listening skills, teamwork, problem solving, moral reasoning, self-esteem, self-confidence and organisation – a dynamic addition to the schools fantastic PSHCE curriculum.

The integration of pupil participation in the decision making structures of our school is very important to us at English Martyrs. This year the children will continue to work closely with staff to put their fantastic ideas into action.
