Modern Foreign Languages

Bonjour, bienvenue! The modern foreign language that we learn at English Martyrs is French. This is taught throughout Key Stage 2. We follow a scheme published by La Jolie Ronde and the emphasis of the lessons is initially on speaking and listening. We believe that the study of French is important as we prepare our children for life in a global society.

Children immerse themselves in the French language and culture through the study of quality literature, songs and rhymes. They have the opportunity to embed high frequency words, a variety of topics and learn something of the structure of the language; recognising parts of speech and conjugating simple verbs. As children make progress in speaking and listening they are able to embed their knowledge skills in speaking and writing in French and can construct sentences and short passages by the time they are ready for High School. They learn to appreciate the culture of France through classical poetry, popular school songs and children's stories which fits well into our ethos of respect and tolerance for other people and societies.
